Surviving death
Vadim Sidur on his 101st birthday
An evening for the sculptor
with the acting duo Antonia Braun and Bernhard Hanuschik
the Slavicist Renata von Maydell and
the cellist Klaus Kämper

How to live in the face of death - this question arose early on for the sculptor Vadim Sidur (1924-1986). He grew up in Dnepropetrovsk (Ekaterinoslav), today's Dnipro. His childhood was marked by the Holodomor, his youth by the Second World War. His home town was occupied, Jewish relatives were shot and he himself became a soldier. At the age of 19, a bullet from a German sniper pierced his jaw and left him an invalid. He sought a universal expression in his work for his experiences of war and violence, but also love and eroticism. People from East and West who were interested in non-official art met in his basement studio in Moscow. From here, his works found their way to Germany

  • Program:
  • Welcome by Dr. Renata von Maydell (University of Konstanz)
  • Klaus Kämper (cello) plays Bach to pictures by Sidur
  • Antonia Braun and Bernhard Hanuschik (acting duo) read texts by and about Sidur
  • Klaus Kämper plays Bach to pictures by Sidur
  • Concluding discussion with Renata von Maydell on the life and work of Sidur and their topicality

The work of the Ukrainian-Russian-Jewish sculptor Vadim Sidur (1924-1986) ties in with events and themes from his biography. These illustrate the experiences of violence experienced by people in Ukraine under Soviet and German rule in the first half of the 20th century. His artistic work is a contribution to the memory of these events in the second half of the 20th century. Vadym Sidur's life and work are thus closely linked to the questions posed by our research project.
